Interview with Algorythms in Dirt Culture #2, 2001

(Well it was supposed to be, but after a quarrel between Dirt Culture and Norway Records it was left out... bastards!)

Tell us, who are the Algorythms?

Ciggy: It started as a way to get rid of frustration, but now we have a message: WATER YOUR PLANTS!
Dan: Are you sure? I thought it was "WET YOUR PANTS!"
Andy: To me it's a chance to play music on a more proffesional level than I've done before.
Dan: We`re ass-kicking punks giving it all spreading the word of Anarchy on stage!

What background do you guys come from? Any other bands?

Dan: Hmm.. I was in a cult-like band called The Ramers. And a punk-band called Seff, together with Ciggy. Never learned how to play the guitar "correct", really, which might contribute to our destinct sound..

Ciggy: I actually come from a family with two cars and a dog. Guess I should be more "normal".. but I've been fascinated by punk ever since I saw a couple of them when I was about 4 years old. I didn't fit in when I was younger, I still don't, I've always hated people following the majority. So I basically told them losers to fuck off. And after becoming a fan of Green Day, Offspring, and Rancid, I got into the Sex Pistols. That's when I read Johnny Rottens biography and started to hang out with this punk-chick. And so I became what I've always been inside, a punk! And I started a punk-band shortly after, including Dan..

Dan: I was a boring kid... mostly like the others.. I was actually a solo-singer in a choir when I was a kid! We even toured! But I suddenly grew tired of being the best at everything, and I guess I rebelled against my parents.. only... They thought it was cool, so I guess I failed.

Andy: Silvers and Vintage Poetry are the best bands I've played in except for "Algo". I've been playing drums since I was 6 years old, and worked with studios, bands and had students for the last 2 years. I've been around when it comes to music..

Ciggy: ..and women.

How and why did you come about you band's name?

Ciggy: Algorithms are strict rules to follow in order to reach a goal. We say fuck the rules and follow the rythm.

How is the scene in Norway?

Dan: Boring... Too few punk bands gets the chance to play on good places. You must eighter play pop-punk of the lightest sort, or know someone who can "sneak you in"..

Andy: There are many punk-bands in norway. But noone seems to get a break. It's very "underground".

Dan: Actually, the only `wegian punk band I`ve ever heared on the radio here is us!

Ciggy: The good thing is that the younger audience seem to enjoy it. Maybe this next generation is fed up with the boy-and girl bands.

Are you guys rock gods in Norway? Are you on the charts?

Andy : Rock gods? Some places, sometimes...

Dan: We`re on charts with the "When you grow up" single on many radios! But major radios won`t a-list punk unless it`s Green Day or Blink, you know.. But we`ve got fans ringing in to those "Wish a song" type shows, so the majors have to air us too! Some radios actually listed the b-side "Stinking Hard" instead, cuz it`s got a slower beat. We`ve got a-listed on shows in other countrys, though, like Hungary!

Ciggy: Even if we aren't rock gods, I've actually been felt up by girls who like our musc. Weird shit that groupie stuff...

Dan: Our live shows ROCK, and when we`re up on the stage, we ARE rock gods.. We`ll put punk back where it belong in Norway! It feels great when you stretch out your hands while playing, and people fight to touch it! Once, I had to stop the song, cuz one kid punched out a girl in a fight to get Andy`s drum stick!

Besides solving complex mathematical problems, whatelse do the Algorythms do for fun?

Andy: Drinking... sex... fixing eachother hairdos...

Dan: The only mathematical problems we`ve ever solved are how long the playlists will last!

Ciggy: I actually devote all my spare time to solving complex mathematical problems, while jerking off.

Dan: It`s true... he calls me up when he`s stuck...

Share with us a true funny story involving groupies, alcohol, or both.

Ciggy: I guess we could go on and on about drinking-stories. But we won't tell you 'bout the groupies. Since the other guys has girlfriends n'stuff, hehe. I haven't paid much attention to the "groupies". Cheap sluts ain't my thing. Andy has a tendency to get undressed during drinking, that's kinda funny.

Dan : Undressed by who? Thats the question!

Ciggy: I was at a party once, at a nudist beach. I drank a lot! I remember going into the forest to make room for more beer. On my way back I fell and couldn't get up, because I was so fucking drunk. Next thing I know, Everybody was gone and I still couldn't get up. When I finally got up and started walking home, which was a long fuckin' way, some idiot with a flash light was yelling at me. I said: Get that fuckin flash light out of my face! Turned out it was a pig, a cop, who were looking for me. I got a ride home, puked in the police-car and lived happily ever after. I hate cops...

Dan: Once at a gig, some guy wanted to sing while we played, and he sang some GG Allin stuff, and started hitting the mike to his forehead... There was blood all over the stinking microphone! The worst thing is that he told his mother that he was on this gig and the microphone stand fell on his head! He blamed us!

Who is your favorite American band? European band? Norwegian band?

Ciggy: In America, I guess Rancid, or Green Day maybe. Sex pistols in Europe ofcourse. I think Humbug is my favorite norwegian band. It's hardcore-metal. I haven't heard much of them though. I like Lint to. A bit Rancid wannabe though. And ofcourse Beinkjor, or Bonedrive, who were caught in a park in England jerking off. And the band Gloom, who is a bit fresh.

Dan: The best American band must be Rancid. The European must be the 70`s band Cockney Rebel, which actually influenced the Sex Pistols allot too.. I can`t say I have allot of Norwegian favorits, but I guess it might be Weld.. Humbug is a cool `wegian punk band though...

Andy: America: No Doubt, Europe: Sex pistols, Norway: De Lillos

What does the future hold for the Algorythms? More releases? Tours?

Dan: The "Directions" single will be out as a promo single in March-April, and it will also appear on a limited editon EP at the same time, to promote the full length album which will be out this fall.

Ciggy: We`ll appear on a compilation in the States called "The 7-Up plan" this year too, I believe.

Dan: The Company (Norway Records) said something `bout a tour in Germany.. maybe this summer..

Andy: A lot of stuff is happening, wait and see... Get ready to be amazzzed...
